Check out garage sales or adds in the local paper. Sometimes there are also local pet shops that may be going out of business wanting to sell their tanks/equipment off for cheap.

You dont have to offer anything on Freecycle, but it is a good way of getting rid of things you dont need.

My wife seems equipment on freecycle on occassion. I've seen a few good deals on Craig's List as well, but that occassionally involves a little bit of travel time.

I was going to suggest Freecycle too - www.freecycle.org
The only teeny snag is that to get something for free (yep, zilch money), is you have to advertise something of yours that you no longer want but you only have to offer 1 thing of yours to get everything else for free.
have seen everything on the site from kitchen units, sheds to baths. You can also post a "Wanted" so if someone has one stuck in their loft, you may strike it lucky. It's always the person getting the item has to collect tho....

Ever thought about making one?
Price up 6mm glass at a local glaziers as long as you keep the depth of the tank to 18" or less, set up a simple wooden jig as a former and use CT1 (http://www.ctecuk.co.uk/) or Dow 787T (http://www.geocel.co.uk/product.aspx?id=5&pr=dc7s) to do the gluing.
You might be surprised at how cost-effective it can be.
This way you can make tanks to fit a particular place in your home and get all the bragging rights about how you did it *all* yourself.

there is a website called gumtree that covers all cities in the uk! its all private sellers ads. there is a freebies section where i found a 60 ltr tank with all accessories in glasgow! go to the site and good luck! (you e mail the seller and hope they get back to you) if there are not any free offers, you can still get your product cheap! i use the site all the time lol! good luck.
