What am I doing wrong with my fish tank?? They all die!?

I had 1 shubunkin and 2 small comets in a 20 gallon tank. The 2 comets dies 1 week after and one by one until die shubunkin died. Now I got 2 new feeder comets 1 inch each and 1 died yesterday and now I just died today. I did a water change and I think I added alittle too much prime.

You are adding too many high-waste fish too early.



Feeder Goldfish have no business in a 20 gallon - they produce way too much waste, and they will eventually need either a pond or a 75 gallon aquarium.



1 Shubunkin alone would be max stocking for 20 gallon. More than that and the aquarium water will become toxic from too much waste.



Aquariums are also especially prone to dangerously bad water conditions while the aquarium is cycling, in the first 4 weeks an aquarium is set up. This is because you need beneficial bacteria to keep the water quality high, which will live in the filter media but need 4-6 weeks to grow to high enough populations to take care of fish waste. Also, this bacteria will be killed by tap water that hasn't been dechlorinated, so you'll have to start the cycle over from the time you rinsed it in tap water.

After you have seen Ammonia spike and go back down to 0 ppm, Nitrite spike and go back down to 0 ppm, and Nitrates present, then you can do a very large water change and put in a single Fancy Goldfish.

When the first fish died I would not have gotten any more goldfish. Didn't you learn that from what we were telling you?

I think I'd buy a heater and some tropical fish. Much easier to care for.



What to do now?

1. If you would like to do tropical then get a heater. An adjustable one.

2. Now you want to fully cycle the tank

-- Always follow the directions on the bottle and do not follow any advice that petsmart says.

3. While the tank is cycling go to the store (petsmart is fine) and browse the tanks for fish that you like. Take a picture of them and write down their name.

4. Go home and research these fish. First you want to know if they can live in a 20 gallon tank. To do this just look up "(example fish) care sheet." Look at about 5 different sites and go with the tank size that is most suggested. Once you know that, look into any other information.

-- Test your tank's pH. If it's high (around 8) then you don't want fish that like a pH of around 6.5.

-- Check to see if the fish are schooling fish. If so, they'll need 5 or more to a tank.

-- If any fish have long fins then make sure none of the fish on your list fin nip.

-- Ideally you'll want a mix of bottom dwellers and middle to top dwellers.

5. Once you know what fish will work in your tank decide which ones you want to buy.

-- Stocking for a 20 gallon tank (you'll find many different versions. I try to make it simple.)

In general:

- You can have one school of 3 inch fish.

- Or do 2 schools of 2 inch fish.

- Or even 3 schools of 1 inch fish.

- You could mix a school of 2 inch fish with one larger school of 1 inch fish if you'd like.

- Or you could do a single non-schooling fish under 4 inches with one school of 2 inch fish or one larger school of 1 inch fish.

- Or even a single non-schooling fish no larger than 5 inches.

- Some examples of fish that can live in a 20 gallon are:

Tiger barbs (3 inch schooling)

Neon tetras (2 inch schooling)

German Blue Ram (3 inch non-schooling)

Bristlenose pleco (4 inch non-schooling)

Guppies (2 inch community (not schooling but shouldn't be alone)

Platies (2 inch community)

Cherry barbs (2 inch schooling)

Ember tetras (1 inch schooling)

Cory cats (2 inch schooling)

And so on.

You get the idea by now.

6. Once the tank is cycled buy your fish. You can do all at once if you do a fish-less cycle.

7. Do proper water changes:

-- The tank is fully cycled. So, after 4 weeks of 1/4 weekly water changes the tank should still be under 20ppm of nitrate. If not then you might have more fish. Yes, even if you follow the above rules to the letter you can still overstock the tank. It's a general rule and it doesn't account for the true waste output of the fish. If you do test the tank for nitrate and find it over 20ppm after doing weekly 25% water changes then try doing an extra good gravel vacuum and a 50% water change.

** When you do that, though, don't rinse or change the filter. You don't want to loose the cycle**.



In answer to your other questions:

Prime isn't going to fix the pH of your tank. I don't know why they thought that. And a drop of prime is far too little for a 20 gallon tank. Yes, you used too little. This would have killed the cycle and caused poisoning to your fish.



The bacteria is in the filter, not the gravel.



If you do decide to try more goldfish then I recommend fancies. Keep in mind that the tank is not big enough for more than 2 fancies, even small ones, and they're going to need a tank bigger than that eventually. Remember: The tank must be 4x longer than the fish is long, 1.5 times wider that it is long, and 5x higher than it is tall.

Do you have an oxygen pump? A lot of the time fish will die without oxygen pumps because they cant breathe in the water that they are living in, because it is a different type of water to their natural habitat.
