I Have a tank with 3 swordtails and 1 female beta. The other day I noticed white blotches on their fins (not ick) after some research and consulting with my LFS we came to the conclusion it was a fungas. I then purchased Lifeguard All In One Treatment to get them well again. Today is their second treatment and when I went to look at them not only do they look worse one tail is laying on the bottom of the tank and another ones fins look to be rotting away (fin rot) and they look like they might have ick too. I didnt expect them to be better in one day but not be worse either. Is this a side effect? Is it too soon to see improvment? Has anyone had any experience with fungas and/or the treatment I used. I MUST NOTE that I did follow the instructions carefull and I did dose them correctly. The temp is also good too. I dont know if this matters but my beta is totally uneffected and doing perfect. Thanks in advance.

the correct answer is allot of the medicines bought at pet stores are very strong, and can be highly stressful on the fish .Some fish do have different tolerances to different medicines.

I do suspect that the fish would of got worse( I know due to my own experience) just keep an eye on them they will perk up, if you see that they are on the verge of dying do a half water change and don't add any medicine for a day or so and then add it gradually over a course of 3 days or so.

Did you do anything recently that could have stressed your fish? Water changes, tank cleaning, changes in pH levels or temperature, adding new fish? Any of these can stress your fish and make them vulnerable to things that were already IN your fish tank such as ich or fungus, and should be done carefully and at a minimal amount to prevent these things from happening. I'm guessing your betta is unaffected because they aren't as vulnerable and can handle environmental changes easier than other types of fish.. and so your betta wasn't stressed like your swordtails were. Also, you do know swordtails are mollys and need brackish water, right? Have you been putting 1 tbsp of aquarium salt for every 5 gallons in your fish tank? If you haven't, this could be part of the problem for them. Bettas don't need salt but mollys do. If they don't have salt, their immune systems are close to nothing an they get sick / stressed very easily. I would suggest adding some aquarium salt and continue treating them for their fungus problem, okay? Also it will definitely help to raise the temperature of the water to around 80-84 degrees F. especially if they seem to have ich. Thanks for reading.

Is this the 10 gallon tank you posted about in a previous question?

Medication affects fish in different ways does your tank have a filter and heater was it cycled and what are your water parameters.?

I have never had to use any medication but some fish are affected more than others especially if your water parameters are not perfect
