What size of tank. How many fish, other than the Betta. These are important things to know. If its about 10 gallons or smaller and only has one or two fish then that's just barely sufficient, by the tiniest of margins. If there are several fish and its a bigger tank say 20 and up, use a proper filter like the Aquaclear 200 or 300, the Penguin series, or filters like this, the hang on back style with a waterfall return system works beautifully, and aerates the water. As a side note you don't really need to filter the water all that much, just enough to remove the fish waste and reduce the chemicals released from the Nitrogen cycle. In fact if you are diligent with your water changes and there isn't a ton of algae on the viewing surfaces I would even say to go without a filter. If its to give the Betta air to breathe, don't worry as the Betta is a member of a type of fish called labyrinth fish, which means they have a labyrinth organ that acts like our lungs do and can thus breathe regular air like us.

They do work to an extent, as long as the tank is very small. You need to change the carbon out every month and you should probably do the floss as often as well. Don't change both at the same time though. Like change the floss on the second week of the month and the carbon on the 4th.

You should see air bubbles coming from the pump if it is working and you set it up correctly. If you see bubbles, then the air bubbles suck in water through the filter and filter the water. Looks like a decent filter.

are they sponge type filters or box filters.they both work ok but cannot take any large debris out .they work fine as bacterial filters.if they have been in for some time you should rinse them out using tank water don,t use tap water as it kills the bacteria[rinse in a bucket or such not in the tank.]hope this helps.

it will work if you have a small tank but i'd use a one with a power hed or one that hangs on the back of the tank.
