First it doesn't matter what size or color they are. The important thing is age, must be 18 mo. old. and between the months of April and July the male goldfish get white dots allover their gill plates. Also if you do a drastic water change it stimulates the female to make row(eggs) and she will get heavy. males tend to be longer in body shape too.

Take them both shopping, the female will display frenetic use of all your credit cards, and the male will, huff, stomp around and generally act like a 5 year old.

Males got a single fin under its tail.

Females got two.

However, it is not fool-proof since some are born handicapped with either clipped fins or no fins.

But in my more than 15-year fish keeping experience, sexing goldfish by the fin gave me 70-90% positive result.

The best way to determine is wait until they are sexually mature.

Females got rounder bellies and got bigger 'holes' for excreting the eggs compared to males. Females are relatively bigger than males if they are of the same age.

Males are thinner. Males usually like to bump females belly or 'butt' that is to somehow signal the females to lay eggs and that he is ready to fertilize the eggs.

Males also have white spots on the gills when they are ready to fertilize the eggs.

I do however, combine all the above-indicators I mentioned. I do trial and error until I can confirm the goldfishes' sex.

In the long run, you will also find your own technique to sex goldfishes.

Have fun!

You can't tell the sex until the goldfish are mature. And that isnt until they are about 5" or more long.

The females have rounder bodies while the male are longer bodies. It is easier to tell them apart when you have several grown goldfish together so you can clearly see the differences.

I was told along time ago that male fish are much better looking/gorgeous/etc than females. I'm not sure how true that is though.
