They have been known to bite their owners fingers occasionally.

It will give you a heck of a fright, and can even draw a bit of blood if they get a good hit in. But nothing that will need more than a band-aid. They dont have huge sharp teeth that can really damage a human.

My problem with Oscars was more that they'd splash me. Though there was this one that would always charge me when I'd stick my hand in there and he would try to come out at me when I'd walk by the tank. They can bite, they do have some teeth, but most of the time they were too big and slow to catch anyone's hand. I used an algae brush on a stick to clean that one, and a big siphon that I just wiggled around him, and he'd usually charge and then move away from the movement.

My advice is: watch him and get your hand out if he comes at you too fast. But wiggle stuff around in there first and see if he goes after that. (That Oscar that hated the algae brush and would hit it HARD before he'd notice that my fingers looked like worms). He's not going to rip off your finger or anything though, so relax, it's a bit hard for them to actually hurt you--they're slow, and it's easy to pull your hand out if you take the lid off the tank.

Oscar fish are aggressive.Yet,They tolerate smaller fish in the tank.Oscar fish can bite but it will either hopefully not be painful. And some reports of Oscar fish have been known to bite a 7 year old kid's index finger off by cleaning the tank.

Yes, they could bite and can rip off fingers (of small kids 1-10)

Oscars are very aggressive and protective of their territory. And y6es they will bite some times, and they can break your fingers. I had a mated pair of fully grown oscars, she was 12' long and he was 15" long both weighed over 10 lbs and they would attack your fingers. I raised babies for 4 years from them to sell until I got tired of raising them and gave them away.

thry can bite you hard enough to scare you, but not do much damage (a bit like getting pinched by a crab or a crawfish) if he does bite, flick him on the nose and he'll back off
