How many goldfish...........and any advice Please!?

Question

Hi my kids have a 45 gallon tank. How many inch long goldfish could it house?? Also are snails in it a good idea?? And finally What air-thingys are the best?? As you maybe able to tell i am a Novice so any advice would be very help full and gratefully received

In a 45 gallon you could easily keep 2 fancy goldfish, the ones with the double tails. However common/ comet goldfish you should stay away from, those will get huge, and really should be in ponds, they are the 25 cent feeder fish they have a single tail.



In a 45 Gallon you can expect the fancy goldfish to get 8-10 inches long, and they produce a lot of wast, so make sure you have heavy filtration!



Snails will be fine, they are kinda messy though, i would suggest getting one apple snail or one mystery snail, they can get to be softball sized if kept properly.



Air pumps aren't necessary, you only have to get one if you want one, they help keep the water oxygenated.



Because your a novice make sure to read up on the "Nitrogen Cycle" its very important in fish keeping. Also make sure to research the specific type of goldfish your getting.

In a 45 gallon tank you could do 3 fancy goldfish, but no common or comet goldfish. Common goldfish need somewhere around 55 gallons a piece and fancy goldfish need 20 gallons for the first one and 10 gallons for each additional fancy. You will also need enough filtration for a 90 gallon tank as goldfish are messy.

Don't listen to the 1 inch per gallon rule. It is outdated and won't work for fish with a bioload as high as a goldfish. Imagine someone putting a 12in Oscar in a 15 gallon tank.

Snails can help with algae, but only get one as they reproduce like crazy.

Also you don't need an airstone.

In my 30 gallon tank I have 2 fantail goldfish with a Aquaclear 70. This filters flow is at 300 gallons per hour. Basically it means that all of the water in my tank is filter 10 times an hour. I have a few snails that came in on my hornwort. The goldfish haven't bothered them yet, but may as they get bigger. I also have an aistone, but it is purely of looks (I have a LED light behind it and it looks really cool).

You should put 2 fantail goldfish in there. If the snails are big enough the goldfish will not eat them right now, but they might if the fish get big enough.

Any decorative bubbler is fine.

Don't forget to cycle the tank and get a good filter! =]

With a 45 gallon you could safely put three small fancy goldfish, five comet or five common goldfish. One large, two medium... Goldfish get very large and are the dirtiest fish there are. They need double the filtration, so perhaps a filter for a 70-80 gallon tank? By airy-thingys I think you mean filter? AquaClear is a great brand. Or do you mean air pump? Any kind will do. Snails aren't a great idea with goldfish.

I Have a 45 gallon fish tank with 4 gold fish they are doing great and I m planning on getting more so in that case i think that you should start with one and like i did and on christmas a year later my parents got me 2 more than i got the forth today! Just have a lot of light and care. DO NOT HAVE A HEATER

If you go with a fancy variety, I'd get 2. This way, you don't have to worry about upgrading or rehoming later on.



Keep in mind that common/comet varieties (aka "feeder goldfish") will far outgrow this tank size, so avoid them.
