Today I purchased 5 fishes for my aquarium: 2 Blushing Angelfish, 2 Opaline Gourami, and 1 African Butterfly....so far they are doing great in my 29 gallon setup. They leave the ABF alone but they occasionally will go harmlessly after each other. I am going to get more fish next week or so and I was wondering what kind to get. Possibly more types of gouramis and weather loaches, but I am not sure what else. I am not going to overstock, so don't bother warning me.

What fish should I add?

Will this scheme work?

I know it is hard to hear what you do not want to hear, but by all accounts your current stocking IS considered fully stocked on the conservative end and over stocked by the people who have experience in these things.

Of course you can always upgrade as the fish grow, but expect to be using that 55 gallon in the next 18 months when the fish are grown and the tank is overstocked. Also watch your nitrates as they can quickly build up in several months if the water changes are lacking, which will cause sudden death in newer fish, and eventually show effects in existing fish.

Assuming you will upgrade when needed, that the angels are tiny now, and assuming you do adequate water changes:

A small school of fish would add some nice activity and color to the tank. With the angels and gourami they should stay in a nice school. I personally love rummy nose tetra and t-bone rasbora for their schooling behavior.

Weather loaches are awesome, but social fish. They tend to do best in a small group of as least three and would certainly overstock the tank, but they too can be upgraded to the 55 gallon in the upcoming year. More gouramis are not advised due to aggression issues that are likely to arise from the existing fish.

1. You are adding to many fish at once. You are going to have an ammonia spike if you aren't careful, which could kill ALL the fish.

2. Your tank is NOT big enough to support ALL those fish.

1 angelfish needs 30 gallons, while 2 needs 55 gallons.

1 opaline gourami needs 30 gallons, 2 needs 55 gallons.

You can have ONE anglefish or ONE opaline gourami. Anything else any you are asking for aggression/bullying problems from these fish (both of which are territorial and aggressive.. The angelfish being the worse of the two), or an overstocked tank.

This is a dumb statement: "I am not going to overstock, so don't bother warning me. "

WHY?

Because you already ARE overstocked! 30 gallon tanks can't hold 2 angelfish. End of story.

Weather/dojo loaches are awesome, but are a bit shy around highly active fish and have poor eyesight and angels and gouramis are a bit agressive, plus dojos also prefer cooler water, so I'd say no to that. Gouramis are a bit territorial and so I wouldn't put any more in there (just so their territories don't overlap). Maybe a small school (4) or corydoras, spotted/pepper variety stay smaller than the emerald and albino, those fish are pretty fun to watch, and will help balance your tank since you've already got a top fish and middle fish. That's all I'd put in.

You are adding too many fish too fast. You need to slow down a cycle your tank before it comes back to bite and kill your fish. If possible return half of the fish now. It will make cycling much easier.

Don't add any more fish ore else you will be overstocked. Those fish grow very big.

How about more of the ones you have? Different colors maybe?

Cherry shrimps are useful and fun.

You know what you are doing. Go with what you like.
