About a month ago my betta got fin rot. His caudal fin was frayed and bloody and chuncks were falling off so I went to the store and bought medication (bettafix). It worked overnight seeing as how his fins wern't frayed anymore the next day. I kept up the treatment and did weekly water changes and he seemed fine and the tail looked normal for a few weeks. Now however, the fin rot has come back and I started using medications again. It kinda looks controlled because his tail isin't exactly rotting, its just bloody at the tips of the caudal fin and it's been like that for about a week now.

He was in a 5 gal:
>heated (its usually at 74-75, saving up for a better heater)
>filtered (not a stong current)
>no tank mates
>no rough plants
and medicated so I don't know why it came back.

Right now hes in a heated (76-78 degrees) and filtered (no strong current) little hospital tank. He eats and swims actively so I don't think he's in pain but I really want this rot thing gone.

I've read that aquarium salt is good at killing bacteria that causes fin rot, would it be ok to use on a betta? If not what are some really good medicines to use?

Yes, freshwater aquarium salt is great for fin rot, especially with preventing secondary infections from setting in.

Really, the best way to treat it is to up the temp to about 82-84 and add some salt.

Check his water quality as well, high levels of any of the wastes can stress him and lead to fin rot.

Also, you said the plants aren't rough but check his plants joints, some silk plants have rough connecting points were the leaf connects to the stem and he may have damaged himself on something.

Best of Luck!

Fin rot treatment is easy and medications are readily available from local fish stores and online vendors. In most cases treatment for fish fin rot is as easy as dropping some tablets or drops in the water. In my experience, the most effective fin rot medications come from Mardel. Mardel makes a variety of very effective fin and tail rot medications such as Maracyn, Maracyn-Two, Maracyn Plus Antibacteria and Tetracycline. I have found that doing a partial water change before adding the medication yields faster and better results. This is especially true if you are dealing with betta fin rot or gold fish fin rot. Betta and goldfish fin rot can also be combated by raising the temperature a few degrees along with the fin rot medication. Cooler water can sometimes provide better conditions for the fin rot bacterium. I recommend keeping fin and tail rot treatment on hand at all times. In my experience, it seems that problems in the fish tank are usually noticed after normal business hours or on weekends when getting the right meds can be hard. Knowing how to identify and properly cure fin rot is important to all hobbyists. Make certain to read and closely follow the directions for any fin rot medicine

The water is grimy and not maintained outstanding- no count style what you're saying, you at the instant are not finding after the fish and his water outstanding. it extremely is truly the only way they might get fin rot. too plenty nutrition or waste might reason this. replace one hundred% of his tank water and replace the sparkling out, might desire to as nicely purchase a simpler sparkling out. one hundred% won't harm him or ask your self him, it extremely is a delusion. Bettas are HARDY. He needs it to do away with the undesirable bacteria starting to be indoors the water. My betta consistently gets an entire tank replace each and each now and then, with sufficient bacteria left in his sparkling out and on his rocks to help. My diverse fish additionally get one hundred% tank adjustments and it does not harm them, none of them have ever gotten ill or died. in basic terms be careful, understand what you're doing. bypass forward and bypass out to PetsMart and purchase a 10 dollar %.. of antibiotics for the little guy. Will sparkling him suitable up. It shouldn't consistently be at 80 tiers- bettas like it around 70-seventy 8 tiers.
