Hello!
I got a birthday present a couple of days ago....a pair of gold fish. I am a little worried about them because I had an aquarium before but all of them died. 1 time the cause was fungus and 2nd time were small insects I guess. But now I am worried about my gift and wanted to know what is this chemical that shopkeeper gave me. Anti chlorine and methylene blue drops.

methylene blue is a type of fish medicine, they are used to prevent and cure certain diseases such as white spot, which are very common fish disease.

anti chlorine is used to purify the water from chlorine. you see, when you use tap water for fish tank they contain chlorine, which is stressful for fish. usually to de-chlorinate you need to aerate the water for 3 days, which means the fish must wait. anti chlorine will fix the problem in a few minutes.

Contray to what most people think, Goldfishes are not a first time aquarist best choice. They're actually pond fish, and do best in atleast 30+ gallon for a single fancy goldfish, and 55+ gallon for common goldfish.

Anyway, to answer your question, dechlorinator, as the name says, de chlorinated the water. Chlorine is a harmful substance found in water. So, everytime you change old water with new, you need to put that drop in the water.
