I had two oscar fish but yesterday one of them died. So I want a new fish to make my tank look cool. I don't want another oscar fish. I want a change for once. But I don't know what fish can live with an oscar without attacking each other. Does anyone know what fish can live with an oscar fish?

Thanks.

It's all tank size and "individual personality" .... Oscars aren't that "bad" of a fish.

Any number of smaller CA/SA cichlids can be mixed with Oscars, any of the larger Characins, most mid-size catfish (Plecs,Pims,Jaguar,Raphael, etc.), Rainbowfish (larger species of course),various Spiny Eel species, some of the smaller Knifefish .... basically anything too big to be eaten can work (with common sense on the owners part). Personally,I HAVE kept them longterm with large Angelfish and Pearl Gourami (yes, adult Oscars with Pearl Gourami) ... but what works for one does not mean it will work for another.

Knowing your Oscar, what size tank you have to work with (75g minimum to keep anything with it),and using just plain common sense will go a long ways toward what "works".

Whats your tank size and how big is your Oscar?

Introducing new tankmates to an adult Oscar can be a problem as it's HIS territory the newcomer is invading. Thats especially a problem with other large cichlids.

Oscars can live with many other large cichlids, IF they get on, letting them grow up together is the best way. Re-arranging the furniture in the tank may help, but allways have a plan B ready in case it doesn't work.

Other species that may work. Large Plecos, spiney eels, bala sharks, tinfoil barbs and even adult silver dollars. But make sure any of those more peacefull fish are big enough that the Oscar cant mistake them for food.

That means you need a big tank, 90gal or more really.

how long have you had your Oscar. If it has been longer than 4 months don't get any more fish yet wait till your Oscar dies to get more fish because the Oscar will become aggressive with the new fish and will kill that new fish. But if it has been less than 4 months...

Tiger Barbs (schooling fish)

Jack Dempseys (need large aquariums)

Pacu (get huge)

Red Devil (ugly)

Other Oscars (you did not want another Oscar)

Silver Dollars (can't keep with live plants)

Rams (small)

And

Texas cichlids (cool)

All of these are good tank mates for a Oscar but if you don't want these fish do your reserch

Oscars will eventually fight with any tank mate thats just their nature. What size tank are you keeping them in???? There are a few fish that can go with oscars peacefuly but most of them grow quite large. ( arrowana, most catfish, red belly pacu, etc)

There is one cool looking catfish that doesnt get to large that has been said to be the perfect tank mate for oscars. Its a Lima shovelnose catfish they only get about a foot long and are very slender. The main reason most people like them is because they are carnivores and some will only eat live food.

An Oscar should have a 75 gallon since a 55 does not allow them much room for turning around. You don't mention your tank size and therefore hard to say what would be OK in it with the Oscar.
