The glass partition should be partial with a slot at the bottom where the glass does not reach. This will be only a centimeter or two tall so no fish can get under it, and the partition should go up at the top to touch the aquarium lid or a center aquarium brace, so they can't jump over it. Then, put the intake of a canister filter or other filter on the female's side, and the return water on the male's side. Place a flat rock on the bottom near the divider on the female's side. The next time she lays eggs, about every two weeks, the male's sperm will be drawn through the slot. Most of the eggs nearest the slot will be fertilized, which will be plenty enough to raise. If you keep them physically together there will be fighting and damage, even in the best of pairs. Some females will lay eggs every 11 days, some every 20 days, but a particular female has a pattern that she holds to unless some illness or stress interferes. Once a month sounds pretty unlikely for a Central American cichlid. It would be just about right for the typical clownfish pair (saltwater). Cichlids tend to breed more frequently, but then after a few spawns, take a break and not spawn at all for a few months. Encourage this since the female needs recovery time. You can slide an opaque sheet over the top of the divider, or (better) move the male to another tank for a while.
