Well in a basic explanation you could say size. Goldfish grow to be between 8 inches for the smaller fancies to about a foot or more for the common and comet types. A carp, also known as koi, is meant mostly for ponds as they grow to be a meter in length and are not really suitable for tanks because of this.



They are different species of fish but very similar in habitat and diet, the most important difference to note is the size difference.

Carps or koi grow a lot larger than goldfish.

Goldfish ARE a carp.



There are many species of carp, goldfish is just one of them, Koi is another.



So all goldfish are carp, not all carp are goldfish.
