just neons you could put somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 (maximum) i believe if that was all that was going in the tank depending on what the other fish are this could change alot. will try to edit with more info
Edit these guys do well following the inch per gallon rule (thats a cubic inch of fish per gallon not an inch of lenght as many people will say)

in a tank of that size, it's pretty relative to your ability to keep your water quality ideal. If you're good with your waterquality and over filtering your tank and have the right plants and stuff in there for a nice buffer, you could easily fit 30-45 in there before you start to get too crowded for space.
It'd be a real nice look to your tank if you put 12-15 Neons in there and then added your larger fish and a few different types of fish to fill in the swim zones of your tank. Avoid Angels though, they will eat your neons. If you're going to get another type of tetra, I like to stick with a different body shape to keep the schools as seperate as I can. You might want to try Hatchet Fish since they inhabit the upper region of your tank mostly and Neons prefer the lower. Just make sure you have a full hood on your tank because the Hatchets will jump.

I would say about 30 neons, but if you are adding more of about the same size, try only 15 of one kind and 15 of another. Try other small tetras, there are plenty that are really neat.
And don't change the pH or GH of your water, messing with these can complicate things more and you could end up losing fish easily, the slightest pH fluctuation can kill a fish. Most fish are used to the water conditions in your area as the pet stores don't usually mess with their water.

If it's ONLY neons you can probably fit close to 100, as long as it's really well filtered and you keep on top of the water changes.
No way I'm going to tell you to do that, as the closer you go to the limit, the more likely you are to suffer some random disaster.
On a practical side, get a decent school, 20-30. It will look good and you will still have space for a few other assorted fish.

Depends on what the other fish are, and how many you want.
Just Neons, you could have 35-40 max, if you do good water changes pretty often, but depending on other fish, I'd probably say you would be safe with 15-25.

Because you have such a big tank(for neon tetras) You can get about 25 neon tetras. However, remember to do water chagnes every week and neon tetras prefer acidic soft water conditions.

about 15-20.But remember the more fish in the tank the less they are going to grow and more water changes.

as a general rule for most fish .... use one gallon of water for every inch of fish... this will keep you from overloading your tank.... but you can fit more than that in the tank but it will require more work to keep it clean..

You can put TONS of neons into a 30! lol I have a 30 right now and I have 10 red phantoms tetra, 12 zebras, 4 green cories, 2 black striped cories, 2 pretcellia tetras. and plan to add at least a 12 neons or cardinal soon. Just make sure you do your water changes and have lots of plants (plastic or live) for hiding. They are shy peaceful fish so watch what you pick as your "big"fish! No Angels!! they are cichlids and love neons for dinner!

with freshwater fish it is good to go by the rule of inches. So one inch of fish per gallon.
You want to make sure you go by the adult size though. So a neon tetra's adult size is two inches, which means you'd be able to add 15 neon tetras to a thirty gallon tank. If you wanted to add more fish though, you wouldn't want to add as many tetras.
When you buy your fish make sure you check the adult size of the fish and don't exceed more than 30 inches of fish, for your 30 gallon tank. :)

You should check into how many gallons per fish is generally required. Don't try to put as many in there as you can. The fish will become extremely unhealthy very quickly. For example, 30 is still probably too many.
