Starting just tonight, it is making crackling sounds like when you roast a marshmallow. And a few minutes ago, it made a loud humming sound for a few seconds. None of the fish, or my electric blue lobster, are dead. Why would it be making these sounds? Should I unplug the filter and heater?

Check your filter to see if anything is stuck in it.

If it is a hob, it could have lost water flow and is now making a grinding lack of water noise. in which case obviously add water. I wouldn't put it up to the heater at all.

The problem will either be the lights or and most likey the filter.

You can remove the filter for a period of time and nothing horrible will happen.

Good luck!

It's important to find the source of the noise. Touch nothing until you determine what's causing the sound. If it's electrical, pull all of the power and remove the noise maker. You may lose some fish, but electrical faults in an aquarium are very dangerous. Take care that the only casualties are fish. If the sounds are not electrical, then you're going to need a mop.

Best of luck. And again, be very careful.

No dont unplug the heater or the filter.

1. if you plug your heater out your fish will go into tempature shock and get sick

and mostly die.

2. if you plug your filter out how are they going to get there oxygen?

.. The problem is your filter. It might just be making sounds maybe its placed the wrong position.

Or there is something internally wrong.

If so just by a new filter to save it from the sounds.

If you have gravel as substrate, then the noise could be your fish swimming over or moving the pieces.
