He has been in many different tanks. He is almost three years old and always floats and the top with his tail down and doesn't move unless i stare and him long enough and he shifts slightly. He floats i've seen him go to the bottom before. The water is cleaned by boiled then cooled to room temp and we never completley empty all the water so he can get used to the enviornment better. BUT WHY??? Do bettas sleep???

MissKLC has it right. The bowls they market for Bettas are not enough space to swim and they don't come with filters and heaters so how would you keep the temperature at 76 or 78 degrees unless you lived in Florida or some place tropical.

Even a 1 gallon tank with filter and heater is FAR better for a Betta than a little bowl that can't house any plants or any space for it to swim around and explore.

Whats the size of his tank? Is it heated and filtered? Betta's will be lethargic and sickly if in too cold of water, Ideal temp is between 74 and 82 degree. Also a betta needs stuff to explore, when I was younger we had a betta in a bowl with nothing, and it did nothing, and sadly it died young. Now I have a 5 gallon and a 20 gallon heavily planted betta tanks, and the bettas a crazy active.

How often do you change the water? An unfiltered bowl is going to need to be changed almost daily, the ammonia will kill the fish, and the fish will lose color and become lethargic before it happens.

Also do you treat the water before putting the fish in, other than boiling it?

Rather than boiling, use a water conditioner like aquasafe or bettasafe, this dechlorinates the water and makes it safe for the fish.

Betta fish are very active creatures and unfortunately have been marketed with lies and inaccuracies. They are tropical fish and need very specific conditions to thrive. A favorite comparison of mine is just because a dog can live in a cage it can barely turn around in doesn't make it a good healthy environment for it to live in, and thrive in.

Oh and yes bettas sleep, but they don't have eyelids so... yea..

But the water conditions are probably no good, if you can get a water testing kit, not the strips, an actual chemical one, I test my tanks regularly especially if a fish is acting funny.

If a its an ammonia problem all is not lost, create the proper environment and the betta will bounce back and be making bubblenests in no time.

Its really important to heavily research your fish!

Its considering which you probably did no longer cycle the recent tank. bypass and get an ammonia and a nitrite and nitrate attempt equipment pronto. i'm having a wager your ammonia stages have spiked in the recent tank. the terrific element to do is take the clear out from his general tank and positioned it on the recent one (DON"T substitute THE clear out PAD). which will reintroduce the helpful bacteria into the tank and your betta would be happy lower back. additionally basically for destiny reference for a million betta in a 10 gallon you do no longer could do a on a regular basis water substitute, like a million gallon a week would be lots.

Fish can not survive in boiled water, when you boil water , it removes all the minerals and healthy stuff that fish need to survive.

Bettas are extra tropical fish, they need to be in a tank with a steady temperature between 78-82. They should be in a cycled 5 gallon or larger aquarium, they need stability in their life to feel safe. They aslo need a variety of foods including dried and frozen blood worms, and frozen brine shrimp. They are carnivores, and pellets and flakes will not provide enough nutrition for them on their own.

Since he's been doing it for 3 years its probably alright. Betas aren't strong swimmers and spend a lot of their time lying around on leaves and things in the wild. They are more active if you have a heater, though, because they are tropical fish.
