I have had common goldfish before so I know how to take care of them but I was just wondering can all goldfish live in a goldfish bowl? I ask this because when you go to a pet store you always see the really interesting ones in an aquarium, i've always wanted a fat goldfish, im not sure what they are called, but they are quite plump and have fairly large tails, also how can you tell a male fish from a female? Thanks =)

No kind of goldfish can live in a bowl. Goldfish are messy creatures that grow very large, which means that they need huge tanks with excellent filtration. A goldfish may survive in a bowl for a few months, maybe even a year or two, but that is a fraction of the age they should reach if cared for properly.

Common goldfish grow 12-18 inches long and can live for 20 years or more. They are pond fish really and should be kept that way.

The 'fat' goldfish you refer to are most likely fantails, one of the varieties of fancy goldfish. Fancy goldfish can grow 6-10 inches (depending on variety) and tank size should be 20-30 gallons for the first fish, and an extra 10 gallons for each additional fish. The filter needs to be rated for at least double the volume of the tank.

This site has pictures of the different varieties of fancy goldfish: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/goldfish.htm

Oh. My. God.

You had common goldfish in a bowl? You do realize they need to be kept in a pond right?

NO goldfish can live in a bowl. A single fancy needs 20 gallons. A common goldfish or a koi fish needs way more than 500 gallons - a pond set up.

Good Lord, ignorance is bliss. T_T No goldfish remains small enough for a bowl. Even the fancies (the smallest ones) can grow to be 6-8 inches long. Given proper conditions they can live for 40+ years. Commons even more. I know a koi fish that's 89 years old!

I know it's been said 100 times already, but I want to make sure it's very clear: no fish in bowls!! Especially not goldfish. They make huge amounts of waste!! They're in aquariums for a good reason - they grow large and need lots of room to swim and strong filters. The "fat goldfish with a large tail" is most likely a fantail goldfish. These are often seen in stores. It's nearly impossible to tell males from females until 2-3 years of age.

p.s. No fish in bowls...

No they cannot and in fact should not be made to do so either.

Fancy goldfish require a minimum of 20 gallon tank with an additional 10 gallons per additional fish. Fully grown they can reach 6 to 8 inches in length. They do best with a good water filter and in tanks that are long rather than tall. It's hard to determine gender until they are about a year old and the males have developed their white tubercles during their mating season.

you are able to no longer positioned all those goldfish in the sort of tiny tank. it is going to in basic terms carry one goldfish. you're able to be able to desire to get an more suitable tank, for 5 goldfish you elect a minimum of a fifty 5 gallon tank. Goldfish get super and bring an excellent style of waste and you'd be the two cleansing the tank each and all the time or killing goldfish from their very own waste advance. that's no longer a smart factor to do. you're top comets or any goldfish for that rely won't be able to stay in a bowl. yet actually a 10 gallon isn't lots extra advantageous particularly once you're speaking approximately comets. Comets get extra advantageous than orandas, and are extremely extra advantageous to ponds than the homestead aquarium. i might examine the LPS and notice in case you ought to easily supply them the two comets. the different 3 fish are sufficiently small now to maintain in the ten yet no longer for long. in the subsequent 6 months or probably a 12 months you will could desire to enhance the three fish to a 30 gallon. finally in the event that they stay alive long adequate and enhance to max length you will choose the fifty 5 gallon tank for basically the three goldfish. I incredibly have 4 goldfish top now in a fifty 5 gallon tank, they're as massive as soft balls and that i ought to alter 0.5 of the water 2 cases a week just to maintain the nitrates exceptable. desire this in circuitously helps your concern. sturdy success.
