Question:
Red Devil or Oscar? 10 points best answer!?
2011-07-08 18:52:38 UTC
I have a 55 gallon tank and I want to get either a baby oscar or baby RD but I can't decide which one. I want to know which one will have more personality(I was thinking the RD cause it's more aggressive than the oscar) but I'm not sure! Also where can I buy one besides a website and a LFS? My LFS treats the oscars worse than walmart and can you give me the price for them? Thx!

I would recommend an Oscar, their about 8 dollars. I love their personalities and their interesting to have around. Red Devils are okay too. But my favorite is my oscar :)

Make sure you have great filtration and do water changes every week.

Good luck with your new pet!

PS, I know Walmart sucks, but you might just want to get one from them anyways, Oscars are hardy and as long as it looks in good health you MAY be okay. But, just in case here's a few sites:

Personally, I would go with the oscar. Just 'cause. They're, how can I say it without violating any copyright laws? They're just more entertaining and personable. They're a joy to have. Plus the fact that other than the Cichla temensis, oscars are my favorite cichlid.

And just as a side note, you're gonna catch a lot of hell from people here saying a 55 gallon tank is not big enough, and they'll recommend you go to a 75 gallon. In all honesty, a 55 gallon tank is the ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM that an oscar can reside in.

I have two friend which both have two oscars. They don't do much.

Red Devil's color changes very often therefore they are more interesting to watch as they grow up. You need to be picking when buying them though because Red Devils looks so much like the Mida Chilad that alot of crossbreeding has happened between the two. It is good that you have a 55 because the is the minimum for a Red Devil!

The thing with Red Devil's is; they need to be kept alone or with mating pairs. They can't grow up with eachother. If you got the oscars then you could get two or three.

Driftwood and rocks are a good decoration for Red Devils but you need to be careful and not have to many because Red Devil's are careless and will run into a rock or piece of driftwood and really hurt themselves. You can use regular pet store gravel but sometimes when they shuffel through it they will hurt their lip, same with Oscars. So I recommend a fine gravel or sand. Don't use plants (real or fake) because it will just be redug up by your red devil and maybe oscar.

A variety is essensial to Red Devils. Go to this site to find out more;

Just put that address into your web browser.

If you want to know more about Oscars then go to this site;

I think that both are really pretty! Hope I helped! Personally I think that you would like the Red Devil's! But you can decide on your own! After all, it isn't really up to me, is it? :):)

Well Oscars are more entertaining, both get big, but I think Red Devils get alot bigger. Oscars range from 5 dollars to 30 dollars all depending on size. Petsmart carries them along with many other pet stores. I don't know where you could find a Red Devil, but to be honest unless you really want one I'd say go with an Oscar. Good Luck

I've never had, but really want, an Oscar. They are supposed to be extremely personable...some people even toss ping-pong balls in their tank for them to play with!

There is a huge tiger Oscar in a really pretty tank setup at our fave local Chinese restaurant - OMG I want to steal him, he's such a ham! I would go with an Oscar, they are so cool!

if you want a more aggressive fish then get the red devil but oscar is aggressive and FUNNY, cuz they get mad easily and they open their mouth to scare things away
