Okay, so I got the tank, the food, decorations (gravel, plant, the whole shabang) and water conditioner. I'm going to get a thermometer when I get the fish, and I got some tap water. I tried to get it at room temperature, but now im just leaving it there, hoping eventually, that it will become room temp. I'm bout to put in water conditioner. I'm thinking about getting some more plants, but I already filled up the tank, so should I put in those plants next time I clean the tank?? And any general info you can give me would be appreciated. I know the basics, no other fish with bettas. They have to have room at top of the tank to breathe, closed lid so they can't jump out, with a few slits in the lid for breathing. It's a half gallon tank, but the is temporary. I'm gonna get another tank soon. So general cleaning info, water temp and type, cleaning.....(I do not have a filter) and just whatever I should know! Thanks! Oh...and names if you want but if you can't think of any thats cool. He's smaller, a crowntail with a little silver on his body, but mainly red. THANK YOU! Any info appreciated.

Half a gallon is really tiny for a betta. If you want him to live a long, healthy life; I would get him a bigger tank. At least 2 and a half gallons. Walmart has a cheap 5 gallon tank that, in my opinion, is perfect for bettas. It comes with a lighted hood and a filter that can be adjusted to a slower current that bettas need. It's only $27 and all you'll need is a heater and the decorations and you'll have a perfect betta set-up. Also, the tank should be properly cycled before the betta goes in it. I know you probably don't want to hear this, but it takes a lot of preparation to properly keep a betta. Same as any other fish. You can't just toss him into a bowl and be good to go.

Well the first thing that comes to mind is, you need a heater.

Unless your room temperature water is between 75F to 82F your Betta will be cold.

Another important point is you cant have the temperature change all the time.

for instance if your keeping the tank in a room where you use an air-conditioner or a thermostat.

it will effect the water temperature too.

You said it right : Betta fish are also called fighter fish for a reason, they need to be alone or they will kill the other fish. and also you need some sort of lid or they will jump out.

some other things you should know are :

The Betta needs to be feed once a day, only what it can eat within 5 min. if the fish looks really bloated, you know its had more then enough. if you feed it to much it might over eat so much it dies.

You need to clean the bowl once a week if it has no filtration. It helps if you keep around a plastic water jug to pretreat water for the weekly cleaning. This will also have it ready at room temperature.(but make sure its clean and always soup free) and remember not to scare the betta with a sudden water change.. do it slowly..

DON’T place the bowl in direct sunlight, or near a cold vent or draft. it will play with the temperature.

About adding the plants, and other ornaments, It is always safe to add new aquarium safe decorations as long as you per-rinsed them first. ohh make sure the ornaments don't have any sharp edges, Bettas are very delicate. they will get cut easily.

one last thing.. I do not know if you got live plants or fake ones. Bettas love real plants! they add oxygen to the water and they reduce ammonia.

1/2 Gallon tank shouldn't house a Betta even for a short period of time. All those waste and ammonia levels will spike quickly and end up killing your fish.

Bettas are tropical fish and require a heater. Heating anything under 5 Gallons is dangerous and can burn your house down. Without a heater they will quickly get sick and die.

Every fish needs a filter. No filter, no fish. Simple as a flowchart.

Did you even cycle the "tank"? If not, don't buy the Betta fish and research cycling your tank.

A Betta needs a heated 5 Gallon with light filtration. Bare minimum.

1..... Dont listen to people who tell you a 1/2 gallon is to small because ive had bettas for years and they dont require that much room.... I had over 10 bettas...... and every single one of them either lived in a glass bowl or a small 1.5 gallon and theyve lived for years and years.. All you need for a betta is a tank, water conditioner, decor, and food thats all they need.

1.) If you want to add plants you can add them whenever you want it doesnt matter, but let me remind you, if its a live plant you have to stay on top of it , so you tank doesnt get cloudy and your fish doesnt get sick.

2.) When cleaning your tank ( NO soap ) you should probably clean it every 2 weeks if its that small because it can get dirty very fast i would probably clean a 1/2 gallon every 10 days.

Thats all you really need to know other then basic betta care

Good luck with your betta:)

Hope this helped!

Honestly, 1/2 a gallon is too small even for temporary care. It also doesn't have a filter or heater, both of which he needs. Try and wait to get him until you have a proper home for him. The water in a tank that small and without a filter is going to be toxic, and he is going to suffer Ammonia poisoning, which can damage his gills and internal organs permanently. If you can't afford a real aquarium a kritter keeper would be better than that. Even daily water changes are not going to make that a safe home for him.

Please don't get the betta soon. You need to cycle your tank. Search up "fish-less cycle" and study that. Once you finish cycling the tank, then come back with your questions. Please, for your own good. Your fish will die a painful death. Imagine, a world where ever single breath you took burned your lungs. Imagine flesh burning acid in your throat. Your fish will suffer if you do not cycle the tank.
